Energy Commission Hosts ASEAN’s First Pilot Summer School For Energy Regulators
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- The Energy Commission of Malaysia (ST), as Chair of the ASEAN Energy Regulators Network (AERN), is hosting the Pilot Summer School for Energy Regulators in ASEAN from Sept 22 to 26 at the PETRONAS Leadership Centre in Selangor.
ST in a statement today said the inaugural programme is the first of its kind in the region, modelled after the longstanding and well-regarded Summer School on Regulation, held annually in Florence.
"The five-day training brings together 35 mid-level professionals from regulatory bodies and utilities across the ASEAN Member States and Timor-Leste to strengthen regulatory capacity, exchange best practices and prepare for the establishment of the ASEAN School of Regulation.
"The programme combines expert-led lectures, case studies, interactive group work and field visits, with a focus on cross-border power trade, market integration, renewable energy adoption and regulatory harmonisation within ASEAN," the statement said.
The programme is organised in collaboration with the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), and in partnership with the Florence School of Regulation (FSR), European University Institute, with support from the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE).
The opening ceremony was officiated by AERN 2025 Chair and ST Chief Executive Officer, Siti Safinah Salleh, on behalf of Chief Secretary to the Government and ST Chairman, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
According to ST, Siti Safinah highlighted Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, noting that the Summer School represents a milestone in building the region’s regulatory capacity, supporting the ASEAN Power Grid and advancing ASEAN’s shared energy transition goals.
As coordinator and host of the event, ST reaffirmed its commitment to advancing regional cooperation and ensuring that regulators and utilities are well-equipped to guide ASEAN’s journey towards a secure, sustainable and inclusive energy future.
