KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) --  ASEAN member countries must nurture in their younger generation the values of cooperation, understanding and mutual respect to strengthen regional unity and resilience in the digital era, said Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.

He said these shared values are crucial to ensuring ASEAN’s continued progress and solidarity as the region navigates an increasingly interconnected and digital future.

“It is often said that traditions are not just preserved, but lived. In the same way, our work in ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting Responsible for Information (SOMRI)  and in this Working Group is not just about policies and projects, but about sustaining a living connection between our peoples.

“Just as traditions are passed from one generation to the next, so too must we pass on to our youth the values of cooperation, understanding and respect in the digital age,” he said.

He said this when speaking at a dinner held in conjunction with the 10th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting Responsible for Information (SOMRI) Working Group on Information, Media and Training (10th ASEAN SOMRI WG-IMT) here, tonight.

Also present were the ministry's Deputy Secretary-General (Telecommunications Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

Mohamad Fauzi said the event was not merely a formal gathering, but a celebration of friendship and solidarity that reflects ASEAN’s unity as one family.

“Malaysia is proud to share a glimpse of our own heritage with you tonight, through food, culture and hospitality. At the same time, we recognise and celebrate the traditions of each ASEAN Member State, which remind us that while our cultures are distinct, our spirit of unity is one.

“May this dinner be a reminder that our diversity is our strength, and our traditions the foundation of a stronger, united ASEAN,” he added.

The 10th SOMRI Working Group on Information, Media and Training, which began here today, brings together senior representatives from ASEAN member states to strengthen regional cooperation in information sharing, responsible media practices and the protection of citizens from harmful content.

The two-day meeting builds upon the outcomes of the 17th ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) and the 22nd SOMRI, which reaffirmed the region’s commitment to promoting digital literacy, responsible media use and safeguarding information integrity.

Malaysia’s delegation comprises representatives from the Ministry of Communications, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Bernama.
