TNB Advances ASEAN Power Grid With Cross-border Renewable Energy Interconnections
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- Under the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is strengthening cross-border interconnections to ensure a more robust supply of green electricity across the region.
There are at least five projects in the pipeline involving a combined capacity of over 6,000MW of renewable energy to be transmitted through Malaysia.
One of the key initiatives is the Vietnam-Malaysia–Singapore interconnection project, which entails renewable energy development in Vietnam and transmission to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. The collaboration involves TNB, Petronas, Sembcorp, and Petrovietnam in support of the ASEAN Power Grid.
In addition, TNB is in the final stages of forming a consortium to develop the Sarawak-Peninsular Malaysia interconnection, which will enable large-scale transmission of renewable hydroelectric power from East to West Malaysia.
TNB chief grid officer Hasmarizal Hassan said a pre-feasibility study for the 700-kilometre project, linking Sampadi near Kuching to Sedili in Johor, was completed earlier this year, paving the way for the formation of a consortium involving both local and international partners.
“We completed our pre-feasibility study earlier this year, and we are now finalising the potential consortium partners. This will be a major undertaking, and we are targeting a majority of local equity participation, with the remaining shares to be opened to international players as well,” he said.
He shared this during his keynote address titled “From Interconnection to Integration: Building ASEAN’s Renewable-Ready Grid” at the ASEAN Energy Business Forum 2025 here today.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in 2023, TNB and Singapore Power agreed to explore a second interconnection project between Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.
The pre-feasibility studies have been completed, with the project targeting a capacity of no less than 1,000MW, and several connection point options are being considered between both countries.
Hasmarizal said all interconnection projects will serve as key enablers of Malaysia’s energy transition, enabling the transmission of up to 6,000MW of renewable energy.
