Momentum Builds As Leaders Gather For 47th ASEAN Summit In Kuala Lumpur
SEPANG, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- World and regional leaders continue arriving in Kuala Lumpur today, heightening anticipation ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, which will officially begin tomorrow at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in the capital.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr of the Philippines touched down at the Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), at 2.55 pm today. He was welcomed by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
Marcos is expected to witness the handover of ASEAN’s Chairmanship to the Philippines, one of the key highlights of this year’s meeting, as well as the signing of several key agreements, including the Declaration on the Admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member.
European Council President Antonio Costa also arrived this evening for his maiden visit to Malaysia since assuming office. He was met on arrival by Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, before inspecting a guard of honour mounted by officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.
Costa will attend the summit as the Guest of the Chair, underscoring ASEAN’s growing engagement with Europe amid global economic realignment.
Earlier, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and his wife, Dr Pich Chanmony, also touched down at the Bunga Raya Complex. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad was there to welcome them.
As ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia is hosting over 30 world leaders from across the region and beyond, including those from the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, to deepen engagement and cooperation while addressing various regional and global issues of mutual concern.
Leaders and representatives from international organisations, including the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), are also scheduled to participate in the high-level regional meetings.
