KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- United States President Donald Trump reaffirmed Washington's full commitment to Southeast Asia, pledging an enduring partnership under what he called the “golden age of America”.

Speaking at the 13th ASEAN-US Summit here on Sunday, Trump said the US remains firmly dedicated to advancing a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific, strengthening ties with ASEAN nations in trade, investment and regional security.

“My message to the nations of Southeast Asia is that the US is with you 100 per cent, and we intend to be a strong partner and friend for many generations to come," he said.

Trump said his administration had restored America's strength and global standing, describing the present period as one of unmatched economic success and international engagement.

“One year ago, we were in a different position, but now, we are in the best position we’ve ever been. I really do say it is the golden age of America," he said.

Trump noted that the US and its partners in the Indo-Pacific are poised to create incredible prosperity for the nations on both sides of the Pacific Ocean and seize new opportunities for the people.

“It really is a pleasure to be with all of you in Southeast Asia, some of America’s most important allies, countries and partners. I am here to deepen our ties of commerce, strengthen our common security and truly promote stability, prosperity and peace for all the countries in this room and far beyond,” he said.

The US President also praised Malaysia for its leadership and hospitality under Anwar’s administration, noting that his visit to Malaysia had also allowed him to witness first-hand the country’s progress and achievements.

“It has really been an amazing experience. I’ve only been here for a day, but the Prime Minister (Anwar) made sure I saw everything, every single thing.

“When I said, well, that’s okay, maybe I’ll take it easy for a little while, he (Anwar)  said no, no, I have other things to show you. He’s something,” he said, reiterating their conversation during their ride in “The Beast”, the presidential car specially flown in for the visit, from the Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, earlier.

Meanwhile, Trump also highlighted the historic roots of America’s ties with Asia, recalling that they dated back to the early days of the republic when fearless Americans voyaged across the Pacific to establish outposts of trade and diplomacy.

“Those bonds, forged so long ago, continue to strengthen and grow to this day, including here in Kuala Lumpur. I'm looking forward to speaking with many of you today and also at Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in South Korea later this week,” he said.

He also cited progress on other Indo-Pacific trade deals with Cambodia, Japan and South Korea, adding that the US is delighted to forge stronger partnerships in energy, technology, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and other industries.

In his remarks, Trump noted the signing of a new trade agreement with Malaysia and his role in brokering the peace deal between Cambodia and Thailand.

He said he had fulfilled his promise to attend the ASEAN Summit after Malaysia played a pivotal role in mediating peace efforts between the two neighbouring countries, culminating in the signing of the KL Peace Accord.

Trump said the peace deal represents one of eight conflicts resolved within the first eight months of his presidency, including the end of the war in Gaza, following the signing of what he called “a very strong agreement” involving 59 countries.

“Today’s signing represents just one of eight conflicts that we’ve ended in eight months of the Trump presidency. I’m very honoured to have done it. We saved millions of lives.

“I also want to thank Malaysia and Brunei, as well as my friend President Prabowo (Subianto) of Indonesia, for their incredible support in these efforts to secure a new day for the Middle East.

“The Middle East will have peace after 3,000 years. This is a very strong peace, it’s going to be an everlasting peace,” he added.
