ASEAN, South Korea Committed To Strengthen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- ASEAN and South Korea are committed to strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through various joint initiatives, particularly in technology transfer, artificial intelligence (AI) as well as information exchange and efforts to combat cybercrimes.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the commitment was expressed during the 26th ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit here today.

“This ASEAN-South Korea dialogue partnership has existed for over 30 years and has now been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, given the significant scale of ASEAN-South Korea trade relations.

“ASEAN aims to further enhance bilateral cooperation with South Korea, especially in technology transfer and AI-related areas,” he told reporters after attending the summit.

The meeting was co-chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

Also present were other ASEAN leaders, namely Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, and Brunei Darussalam’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Indonesia was represented by Foreign Minister Sugiono, while Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs U Hau Khan Sum represented Myanmar.

The three-day 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits are being held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Sunday under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.

The event brings together more than 3,000 delegates and prominent leaders from over 30 countries and organisations to strengthen regional engagement and cooperation.
