Anwar, Wan Azizah Host ASEAN Leaders, Spouses At Gala Dinner
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, tonight hosted a Gala Dinner in honour of ASEAN leaders and their spouses, celebrating friendship, unity, and cultural diversity in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
More than a formal diplomatic occasion, the event served as a platform for cultural diplomacy, reflecting the enduring spirit of inclusivity and solidarity that defines the ASEAN community.
Adding a uniquely Malaysian touch, the leaders and their spouses were attired in garments made from Tenun Pahang Diraja, a royal handwoven fabric crafted by inmates at the Bentong Prison in Pahang.
The evening also carried a moment of special significance for Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was honoured with a simple yet heartfelt celebration marking his 80th birthday. The Brazilian leader appeared visibly moved as he joined Anwar in cutting his birthday cake while the “Happy Birthday” song was performed by Trupe De DomMarina.
The Gala Dinner showcased a spectacular lineup of performances by renowned Malaysian singers Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, Datuk M. Nasir, and Dayang Nurfaizah, themed around regional cultural diversity and shared identity.
The performances were divided into several segments, where performance highlights the unique culture and identity of the ASEAN member states, accompanied by a visual performance by sand artist Bernice Wong from Penang, which depicts iconic regional monuments set to orchestral music.
