Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship Culminates On Final Day Of 47th Summit - PMO
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship reaches its peak today, marking the close of the 47th ASEAN Summit after three days of extensive discussions and constructive dialogue that have elevated regional diplomacy to new heights.
The Prime Minister’s Senior Press Secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Daily Briefing, broadcast live on the PMO’s official Facebook page, that under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia has strengthened regional cooperation and ensured that ASEAN remains united, relevant and respected on the global stage.
He said the Prime Minister chaired five key sessions yesterday, including the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit, where Malaysia urged recognition of Palestine and welcomed the 2026–2030 Plan of Action to deepen regional cooperation.
“The economic agenda also featured prominently through the ASEAN+3 Summit and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit, which emphasised collaboration in the digital economy, clean energy and supply chain resilience to ensure inclusive growth across the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.
The East Asia Summit (EAS), held in Kuala Lumpur, brought together major powers including the United States, China, Russia, Australia, Japan, India and New Zealand – reaffirming its role as a key platform for addressing strategic regional issues.
“Significantly, this year’s (EAS) summit takes place 20 years after the inaugural meeting at the same venue, a testament to the forum’s enduring contribution to regional stability,” he said.
At the ASEAN–United Nations (UN) Summit, Malaysia expressed appreciation to the UN for its efforts towards achieving peace in Palestine and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting such initiatives.
“In a spirit of goodwill, the Prime Minister and his wife also hosted the ASEAN Gala Dinner, attended by ASEAN leaders, dialogue partners and the chair’s distinguished guests,” he added.
On the final day of the summit today, Anwar is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings and chair key sessions including the 28th ASEAN-China Summit, the ASEAN-New Zealand Commemorative Summit and the 5th ASEAN-Australia Summit, which will focus on boosting economic, trade and sustainable development cooperation.
“One of today’s highlights is the ASEAN–China Free Trade Agreement, which will further strengthen regional economic ties,” Tunku Nashrul said.
The summit will conclude with the official closing ceremony and the handover of ASEAN’s chairmanship to the Philippines.
According to Tunku Nashrul, the successful conclusion of the 47th ASEAN Summit reflects Malaysia’s effective leadership as ASEAN Chair 2025 under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’.
“Malaysia also extends its full support to the Philippines as it assumes the ASEAN chairmanship. May the spirit of unity and cooperation fostered here in Kuala Lumpur continue to flourish and bring lasting benefits to the ASEAN community,” he said.
