Malaysia’s GDP To Grow 4.0 Pct In 2026 On Strong Sectoral Momentum -- MIER

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) expects the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to expand at 4.0 per cent in 2026, supported by continued strength in the services, mining and manufacturing sectors.

MIER non-resident senior fellow Khalid Abdul Hamid said that although the mining sector experienced some disruptions this year, it is anticipated to perform better next year.

“The only concern is the uncertainty in the world economy, (due to) geopolitical problems and things like that. So, that is probably why they (mining sector) have forecasted a bit lower in terms of next year’s growth,” he told reporters at the National Economic Outlook Conference, here today.

Khalid stated that Malaysia’s economic structure remains solid and resilient, positioning the country to tap into more growth opportunities.

“With our strong fundamentals, we will be able to absorb the global headwinds and external factors,” he said.

Regarding the Malaysia-United States Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, Khalid noted that, while the policy remains intact, certain tariff-related matters continue to be challenged in the US courts.

He stated that the key focus should be on mitigating its direct and indirect impacts.

Meanwhile, Asian Development Bank regional lead economist for Southeast Asia James P Villafuerte said ASEAN’s growth is projected to be around 4.3 per cent to 4.5 per cent in 2025-2026 as inflation remains contained across most economies.

He said that despite the global uncertainties, ASEAN continues to expand at a robust pace, supported by strong domestic demand, better macroeconomic policies and resilient infrastructure investment.

He noted that countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia are benefiting the most from improving external conditions, particularly in more open, higher-income economies.

To sustain growth and avert a slowdown, Villafuerte said ASEAN must strengthen regional frameworks for integration, innovation, and inclusiveness, while maintaining strategic neutrality and strong engagement with the US and China.
