KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia supports ASEAN’s efforts to strengthen regional energy security following geopolitical uncertainties in West Asia that could potentially disrupt energy supply, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said.

The matter was discussed during the Special ASEAN Energy Ministers’ Meeting held virtually today, focusing on the implications of the current situation in West Asia on energy stability in the region, he added.

“Malaysia fully supports ASEAN’s efforts to strengthen existing mechanisms, expand expertise-sharing and coordinate response measures in facing any disruptions arising from geopolitical uncertainties,” he posted on Facebook today.

Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said Malaysia also shared several targeted measures being implemented by the government to improve energy efficiency, including subsidy rationalisation, the introduction of flexible working hours and the promotion of energy-saving practices among consumers.

He also emphasised the importance of closer cooperation among ASEAN member states in strengthening regional energy security through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative, which was agreed upon last year.

According to him, national-level efforts must align with the regional vision to ensure a more effective response to any energy supply challenges, with close and integrated cooperation among member states being key to ASEAN’s energy resilience.
