Raja Of Perlis Launches Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Free Trade Zone-PIP
PADANG BESAR, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, today graced and officiated the launch of the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Free Trade Zone-Perlis Inland Port (PIP) here.
In his royal address, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said the development of PIP as a free trade zone was not merely a symbol of physical development but a strategic step towards strengthening Perlis’ and Malaysia’s position as a regional trade and logistics gateway, anchored on intra-Asia land transportation, particularly the Pan-Asia railway network.
“I am confident that this free trade zone will serve as a catalyst for new economic growth, create investment opportunities, strengthen cross-border trade and boost the logistics and industrial sectors in northern Peninsular Malaysia, while contributing to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“Given Perlis’ strategic location bordering Thailand and its position along a key ASEAN trade route, I urge the Federal Government to continue paying attention to and investing strategically in efforts to accelerate the state's economic growth,” His Royal Highness said at the launch ceremony.
Also gracing the event was the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail. Among those present were Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah and Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said he had consented to the use of his name for the free trade zone and expressed hope that it would continue to grow into a modern logistics and trading hub capable of attracting high-quality investments while strengthening Malaysia’s economic ties with neighbouring countries and international trading partners.
“This development will not only benefit large-scale trade and industrial sectors, but also generate spillover benefits for the people through job creation, the growth of small and medium enterprises, and greater awareness among younger generations of the vast opportunities in the global marketplace,” the Ruler said.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said that just as developed nations are recognised as international trading centres, Perlis also has the potential to emerge as a major ASEAN trade gateway due to its position at the convergence of the Intra-Asia Land Rail Corridor and the Malacca Strait Maritime Corridor.
“With the support of the Federal Government, the state government, investors, development agencies and industry players, I am confident this vision can be realised,” His Royal Highness said.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also called on all parties to uphold integrity, diligence and professionalism in management practices to ensure Perlis is recognised as a preferred trading hub for international investors and entrepreneurs.
His Royal Highness also expressed his appreciation to Mutiara Perlis Sdn Bhd, the Perlis state government, the Economy Ministry, particularly the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority, the Transport Ministry and all parties involved in the development of PIP.
“The commitment and close cooperation of all parties have made this strategic development a reality,” Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said.
