Japan Vital In Strengthening ASEAN's Economic Resilience
KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- Japan and ASEAN need to deepen their strategic partnership in frontier technologies, energy security, and economic development to strengthen the region's economic resilience amid growing geopolitical and geo-economic challenges, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr. Sufian Jusoh said.
Such collaborations are vital with the increasingly complex global geopolitical landscape, driven by regional conflicts, trade uncertainties and intensifying technological competition.
"Malaysia and ASEAN need Japan's support in frontier technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum technologies and the processing of critical minerals, through investments in infrastructure, talent development and technology transfer.
"Such cooperation is essential to ensure that ASEAN not only remains a manufacturing hub but also emerges as a global leader in technological innovation," he said during a roundtable meeting with Japanese parliamentarians at Raffles Hotel, Singapore, which brought together academics, policymakers and industry leaders to discuss the future of ASEAN integration and Japan's role in supporting regional economic development.
He noted that while ASEAN has emerged as a major global investment hub for the semiconductor and electronics industries, most ASEAN member states remain technology adopters rather than technology frontrunners.
Sufian pointed out that energy security remains one of the region's most pressing challenges, particularly as emerging technologies require a stable and sustainable energy supply to support future economic growth.
“As both ASEAN and Japan are vulnerable to disruptions in global energy markets arising from geopolitical instability, greater investments in clean and renewable energy, energy infrastructure, and stronger collaboration with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are essential to enhance regional energy security,” he said.
He also noted that recent developments in global trade and technology policies have created an opportunity for Japan to play a more significant role as ASEAN's strategic partner through a trust-based approach centred on technology transfer, research collaboration and human capital development.
“UKM remains committed to supporting this agenda through its collaboration with the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the establishment of the Semiconductor Center, Quantum Center, ASEAN Institute, and Centre for Critical Minerals, which will serve as platforms for research, innovation and talent development in support of ASEAN economic integration,” he added.
