Mohamad Sabu Attends ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting On Agriculture
HYDERABAD, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu participated in the 9th ASEAN–India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (AIMMAF) in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The Malaysian minister said in a Facebook post that an interaction session with scientists, researchers, and Indian industry players provided an opportunity to exchange views on agricultural challenges and the role of technology in boosting the agro-food sector.
“This session provided an opportunity to exchange views and expertise on agricultural challenges and the role of technology in strengthening the agro-food sector in the region.
“Cooperation between ASEAN and India needs to be further strengthened not only through trade, but also in research and development (R&D), technology transfer and development, investment, as well as strengthening value chains,” he said.
He said the sharing of knowledge and expertise was important in efforts to increase agricultural productivity and strengthen regional food security.
ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn in his pre-recorded remarks at the ministerial gathering underscored the importance of strengthening ASEAN-India cooperation on food security.
India is an important economic partner for ASEAN, Kao said, noting that bilateral trade in goods in the financial year 2025-26 reached US$128 billion.
"Food and agriculture are an important part of this relationship, with considerable scope to expand two-way trade, strengthen regional value chains and create new opportunities for farmers and businesses," the ASEAN secretary-general said.
India’s Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called for further expansion of the India-ASEAN agricultural partnership to promote technological innovation and strengthen regional linkages.
