NINGDE (China), Sept 20 (Bernama) -- Chinese new energy technology company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) sees ASEAN as a market with huge growth potential for power batteries.

A CATL spokesman said the company viewed ASEAN as a large market with significant potential for future growth.

“Currently, we are actively promoting cooperation related to Southeast Asia,” he said during a media visit to the company here today.

On potential cooperation in the battery sector, he said CATL could explore various forms of collaboration, including investing in or jointly building factories in ASEAN countries.

“We can for example, invest in building the factories there, or we can have cooperation to build the factories in the ASEAN countries. And also cooperation with car companies,” he said.

Headquartered in Ningde, Fujian Province, CATL is principally engaged in the research and development, production and sale of power batteries and energy storage batteries.

The company has 28 battery manufacturing bases worldwide and sells its products in 74 countries and regions.

As of June 2026, the cumulative global installation of CATL’s power batteries has exceeded 28.65 million units.

According to SNE Research, CATL accounted for 39.2 per cent of global power battery consumption in 2025, ranking first globally for nine consecutive years from 2017 to 2025, and its overseas market share stood at 30 per cent in 2025.

CATL has six research and development (R&D) centres in Ningde, Liyang, Shanghai, Xiamen, Hong Kong and Munich (Germany), with a research team comprising about 23,000 members.

In 2025, CATL's total R&D investment reached 22.1 billion yuan (100 yuan = RM62.42), accounting for a continuously rising proportion of its revenue, with a cumulative R&D investment of over 100 billion yuan in the past decade.

In the energy storage sector, CATL’s energy storage battery shipments reached 121 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2025, accounting for 30.4 per cent of the global market. It retained the top global position for five consecutive years from 2021 to 2025, with over 3,000 cumulative global application projects.
