KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- An allocation of RM240 million has been set aside for Malaysia's preparations to host the 2027 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said the prestigious sporting events should be leveraged to enhance the country's standing and foster a spirit of unity among the people.

“Next year, we will once again welcome our neighbouring countries as host of the 2027 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games.

“These prestigious events should be leveraged to enhance the country's standing and foster a spirit of unity among the people,” he said when tabling the 2027 Budget themed “Reaching for the Sky, Rooted in the Ground” in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The 2027 SEA Games will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor and Penang from Sept 18 to 29 next year.

The 2027 ASEAN Para Games (APG) will be held in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 17 to 23.

Meanwhile, Anwar announced an allocation of RM460 million for national sports development.

He said the allocation included strengthening high-performance sports programmes and the Road to Gold programme, programmes for para athletes and deaf sports, as well as the maintenance of sports facilities nationwide.

He said the government had also allocated RM30 million for the Sports Matching Grant to encourage sports associations, clubs and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) to organise high-performance sporting events.

“The allocation for school sports activities has also been increased by 50 per cent to RM27 million. This will benefit more than 4.6 million pupils in 10,000 schools nationwide,” he said.

Anwar also congratulated and expressed his appreciation to the Malaysian contingent for winning nine gold, seven silver and 16 bronze medals at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan recently.

“To all the athletes, coaches and support personnel, congratulations and thank you for bringing glory to the country,” he said.

The achievement in Japan saw the national contingent match its medal tally from the 2010 edition in Guangzhou, China.
