KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will undertake an official visit to Malaysia tomorrow (Oct 25) at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Foreign Ministry, in a statement today, said this will be Anutin’s first official visit to Malaysia since assuming office in September 2025.

“Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya, followed by a bilateral meeting with Anwar,” it said.

During the meeting, both leaders are expected to take stock of bilateral relations, explore new avenues for cooperation, and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Upon the conclusion of his official visit, Anutin is scheduled to participate in the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, to be held from Oct 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair for 2025, will host the summit which brings together leaders of ASEAN member states and key external partners to promote regional cooperation, inclusivity and sustainability.

The ministry said the visit is also part of the exchange of visits at the leaders’ level this year, following Anwar’s working visit to Bangkok, Thailand from April 17-19.

“This visit further reflects the warm and enduring friendship between the two nations as close neighbours and fellow member states of ASEAN,” read the statement.

In 2024, Thailand was Malaysia’s seventh-largest trading partner globally and the third-largest among ASEAN member states, with total trade amounting to RM114.56 billion (USD25.03 billion).

From January to August 2025, bilateral trade between the two countries reached RM77.52 billion (USD17.88 billion), compared to RM76.95 billion (USD16.45 billion) during the corresponding period last year.

Meanwhile, in BANGKOK, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said Anutin’s first official trip to Malaysia since taking office in September is aimed at strengthening cooperation and deepening relations between the two neighbouring countries.

In a statement on Friday, the ministry said the bilateral meeting between Anutin and Anwar will focus on enhancing collaboration in border security and connectivity, promoting trade and investment, and advancing joint efforts to spur economic development and improve the livelihoods of people in Thailand’s southern border provinces.

The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international issues, as well as cooperation within ASEAN under Malaysia’s current chairmanship.

“The visit underscores the importance both countries place on strengthening their long-standing partnership and fostering closer cooperation for peace, stability, and shared prosperity in the region,” the ministry said.
