KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- Canada stands ready to resume trade negotiations with the United States, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said today.

However, the timing of any engagement rests with Washington.

“We stand ready to sit down with the US, myself with President (Donald) Trump, my colleagues with their colleagues. When the US is ready...we don't dictate the timing of that,” he told a press conference on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits here, today.

Last Thursday, Trump announced he was cutting off trade talks with Canada after an Ontario political ad used a snippet of Republican icon and former President Ronald Reagan saying tariffs cause trade wars and economic disaster.

Washington also announced an additional 10 per cent tariffs on goods from Canada on Saturday.

Canada is the US’ second-largest trading partner.

Carney reiterated Canada will continue pursuing its trade diversification agenda, including new agreements in Asia and Europe and accelerating talks within ASEAN.
